John Denver Reaches Number One With 'Annie's Song' 38 Years Ago

2001 - Mariah Carey Checks Herself Into Hospital

Mariah Carey checked herself into a hospital for "extreme exhaustion" on July 27, 2001.

The singer's movie "Glitter" was set to be released the following month, and the illness was blamed on the stresses surrounding the effort. (When it opened, the film would become a critical and commercial bomb.)

Carey had sparked headlines over the previous few weeks for her increasingly bizarre public behavior. A little more than a week before checking herself into the hospital, she had showed up unannounced on MTV's "Total Request Live" and conducted what seemed to be a simulation of a striptease.

The day before seeking help, the singer left some rambling messages on her fan website, including such quotes as "just can't trust anybody anymore right now because I don't understand what's going on" and "I'm desperately trying to get out of this room."

In the wake of her breakdown, Carey canceled her public appearances, which contributed to the "Glitter" soundtrack becoming the lowest-charting album of her career. She rebounded with 2002's "Charmbracelet," however, and reached the top of the charts again with 2005's "The Emancipation of Mimi."
