The New York Dolls released their self-titled debut studio album on July 27, 1973. The album is widely credited as one of the first punk albums and is often referred to as “proto-punk.” It was produced by Todd Rundgren, who had been the guitarist for the band Nazz. They cut the album at the famed Record Plant in New York City, and band member Sylvain Sylvain recalls that Rundgren took a fairly hands-off approach with the band:“He left us to be ourselves, but if something wasn’t sitting right, you could always say, ‘Hey Todd, can you fix me up?’ And he’d mess around with the EQ or move the mics around, and it would be great. Todd can get really deep into his techniques, but he knew that, with the Dolls, if it isn’t swinging on the basic tracks, it ain’t gonna swing no matter how many overdubs you do,” Sylvain told GuitarPlayer.com.
