U2 guitarist The Edge was born David Howell Evans in the Barking area of London, England, on August 8, 1961. He was born to Gavin and Gwenda Evans, and his father worked for an energy company after completing his military service. Having served in Ireland, Gavin gladly accepted a transfer to Dublin when David was just a young boy. The Evans household was very musical, with The Edge’s mother becoming a member of the Musical Society in their neighborhood of Malahide. His father also co-founded the Dublin Male Welsh Choir. With his younger brother Dik Evans, The Edge first met Larry Mullen after the young drummer posted an ad seeking musicians for a band on a school notice board.Six people in all responded to the ad including the Evans brothers, singer Paul Hewson (soon to be known as Bono) and bassist Adam Clayton. They had their first rehearsal in Mullen’s kitchen in Dublin on September 27, 1976. Dik Evens would eventually leave the band, then called the Hype, when the group decided they had too many guitarists. As a four-piece, the band went on to international fame as U2, with such songs as “With Or Without You,” “Desire” and “Mysterious Ways.”
