Singer Brian Hyland and his orchestra hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" on August 8, 1960. The track was penned by Paul Vance and Lee Pockriss and was released as part of the album “The Bashful Blonde.”When the track hit number one, it claimed the top spot from "I'm Sorry" by Brenda Lee. The track held the top spot for one week before “It’s Now or Never” by Elvis Presley hit number one. Speaking of the track in the book “1000 UK #1 Hits,” Hyland recalled:"Paul Vance and Lee Pockriss had shown this song to a lot of singers but no one wanted to do it. Kapp (the owner of Brian's record label) thought it was right for me and got really excited about it. It was a number one in America which meant that I could stop riding on the subway and buy some Martin guitars."
