1956 – ‘Don't Be Cruel’ Hits #1
1956 – ‘Don't Be Cruel’ Hits #1

Elvis Presley hit number one on September 15, 1956, with “Don’t Be Cruel.” The song was released in July of that same year, backed by another classic track, “Hound Dog,” which hit the charts first.

However, “Don’t Be Cruel” soon overtook “Hound Dog,” topping the Pop, Country and R&B charts. The single sold four million copies by the end of 1956 and became one of Elvis’ best-known songs. In 2004, it was listed at number 197 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
