2002 - Eminem's ‘Cleaning Out My Closet’ Released As Single

Eminem released “Cleaning Out My Closet” as a single on September 17, 2002. The track was released off Em’s fourth studio release, “The Eminem Show,” and followed his previous 2002 single “Without Me.”

The track quickly broke into the top ten on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Rap Songs charts, peaking at number 4 and 5 on those charts, respectively. On the track, Em reflects on his troubled childhood, broken marriage and relationship with his mother.

One of the personal topics broached in the track is the passing of Eminem’s uncle Ronnie. He blasts his mother’s handling of the death, saying: “Remember when Ronnie died and you said you wished that was me..." The rapper now dons a tattoo with the name “Ronnie” on his left arm.
