The Four Tops scored the number one position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with the track “Reach Out and I’ll Be There” on October 15, 1966. The track was released as part of the group’s album “Reach Out” and was released with the B-Side “Until You Love Someone."When the Four Tops hit number one with “Reach Out and I’ll Be There,” they bumped "Cherish" by the Association out of the top spot. The vocal icons held on for two weeks at number one with the track before "96 Tears" by ? & the Mysterians moved into the top position. The song was written by the legendary Motown writing team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland, who had also penned the Four Tops’ first two hits, “Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)” and “The Same Old Song.” The singers originally thought that “Reach Out and I’ll Be There” would not even be released as a single, but within two weeks of its release it became the group’s biggest hit.
