"New Jersey," Bon Jovi's fourth studio album, first reached the top of the Billboard 200 on October 15, 1988. The album, released in September, featured hits like "Bad Medicine" and "I'll Be There for You," each of which reached number one as singles.

"New Jersey" unseated Guns N' Roses' "Appetite for Destruction" to take the top spot, and reigned on the album chart for four weeks. It was eventually knocked out of the number one position by U2's "Rattle And Hum."

The LP was Bon Jovi's second number one, following up on the smash success of 1986's "Slippery When Wet." It was also the band's last number one for almost two decades. Bon Jovi would not top the album chart again until 2007's "Lost Highway."
