Bruce Springsteen released his thirteenth studio album, “Devils and Dust,” on April 26, 2005. It was the first release for The Boss since his 2003 collection “The Essential Bruce Springsteen” and the title track was released as the lead single.

The album hit the top of the Billboard 200 chart on May 8, 2005, claiming the top spot from “...Something to Be” by Rob Thomas. Springsteen held on through May 14 at number one before “With Teeth” by Nine Inch Nails claimed the top spot.

According to Springsteen, that album builds on his vision of America first touched on with “Born to Run”:

“On ‘Born to Run’ there’s a sense of longing to break free—but to what? Longing to move forward and ahead—but to where? Through ‘Devils and Dust’ I’ve been trying to answer those questions,” he told the Wall Street Journal in 2005.
