The famed Manhattan disco Studio 54 opened on April 26, 1977.The club, located at 254 West 54th Street, would become one of the hottest night spots in New York City, attracting a jet-set clientèle of celebrities. Mick Jagger, Cher and Andy Warhol were among the luminaries that were known to frequent the disco. In late 1978, Studio 54 owners Steven Rubell and Ian Schrager were arrested on tax-related charges. Eventually, this led to the closing of the club, though it would reopen in the early 1980s under new management. It would close for good in 1986, with a theater company now occupying the address.
