1983 - Michael Jackson Hits #1 With ‘Beat It’
1983 - Michael Jackson Hits #1 With ‘Beat It’

Michael Jackson's "Beat It" became the number one song in the U.S. on April 30, 1983.

Written by Jackson and co-produced by Quincy Jones, the song appeared on the legendary "Thriller" album. The LP also included the title track, "The Girl Is Mine" and "Billie Jean."

"Beat It," which featured a guitar solo by Eddie Van Halen, replaced "Come on Eileen" by Dexys Midnight Runners at the top of the chart. "Come On Eileen" had taken over number one from "Billie Jean" and only lasted a week at the top of the chart before Jackson returned to the number one position with "Beat It."

The song held on for three weeks before giving way to David Bowie's "Let's Dance."
