1982 - Lester Bangs Dies

Famed rock journalist Lester Bangs died of an accidental drug overdose in New York City on April 30, 1982. Bangs had been best known for his work with Creem magazine as well as Rolling Stone.

Bangs was found dead after having ingested a lethal mix of Darvon, Valium, and Nyquil to help him sleep as he recovered from the flu. Though bangs had battled addiction throughout his life, he had been clean for his final six months.

His close friend and contemporary Robert Christgau of the Village Voice wrote a tribute shortly after Bangs’ death, saying:

“He wasn't long on the values ordinarily sought in a critic--balance, consistency, analysis, judgment. But his writing was dense with the crazy, unschooled virtues of the music that moved him most deeply--again and again his conceits came from nowhere and hit some fundamental question right where it hurt.”
