Rihanna hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with her single “S&M” on April 30, 2011. The track was released off Riri’s fifth studio effort “Loud” and followed her previous 2011 single "All of the Lights.”When the track hit number one on the chart, it claimed the top spot from "E.T." by Katy Perry. Rihanna held on for one week in the top spot before Katy grabbed the top spot back again. The track was co-written by Ester Dean, who explained it to Billboard, saying:"The first thing that came to me was 'Come on, come on.' I'm thinking, 'I don't know what in the hell this is about to be.' And I remembered I'd seen something that said, 'Sticks and stones may break my bones.' Then came 'But chains and whips excite me.' When people have a great track that speaks to me, it feels like it already has a story in it,” she said.
