A relatively unknown Jimi Hendrix opened for the Monkees at Jacksonville Coliseum in Florida on July 8, 1967. Hendrix’s status as an international rock icon had not yet taken hold and his manager Chas Chandler secured the high-profile opening slot with the pop matinee idols. According to Jimi’s sister Gloria, the Monkees demanded that Hendrix open their tour after meeting him at the Monterey Pop festival. The Monkees fans, however, reacted harshly to Hendrix’s over the top showmanship. Hendrix was dropped from the tour after eight gigs. “They were in New York staying at the Warwick Hotel . . . I went over and Jimi was crestfallen. He was smoking joint after joint after joint and he was a heartbroken man. They’d kicked him off the tour,” Gloria recalled in “The Jimi Hendrix Experience” by Jerry Hopkins.
