2000 - Lee Ann Womack's ‘I Hope You Dance’ Hits #1 On Country Chart

Lee Ann Womack hit the top of the Billboard Country Songs chart with her hit single “I Hope You Dance” on July 8, 2000. The track was released has part of her 2000 album of the same name and followed her 1999 single "(Now You See Me) Now You Don't.”

When the track hit number one on the chart, it claimed the top spot from "Yes!" by Chad Brock. She held on at number one for through August 5, 2000, when “What About Now" by Lonestar grabbed the top spot. Speaking on the track with the Today show, she explained:

"You can't hear those lyrics and not think about children and—and—and hope for the future and things you want for them. And those are the things I want for them in life. I want them to feel small when they stand beside the ocean. Sometimes I have fun and lighthearted things. But even "I Hope You Dance." I was so shocked to see the way the kids got it.”
