1983 - Whodini Releases Self-Titled Debut Album

Whodini released their self-titled debut album on July 8, 1983. The album was released via Jive/Arista and featured the hit singles "Magic's Wand" and "The Haunted House of Rock." The group had signed with Jive, which was independent at the time and based in London, the previous year.

To help give their debut release a boost, the group connected with early synth-pop pioneer Thomas Dolby, who produced “Magic’s Wand.” Managed by Russell Simmons and his brother, Run of Run-D.M.C., they also gained U.S. support through Arista.

“Magic’s Wand” was a minor hip-hop hit at the time, but later went on to gain another life in the video game “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.” The song comes on when players tune in to the Wildside Pirate Radio station.
