Stevie Wonder announced his plan to run for Mayor of Detroit on July 8, 1988. The Motown star broke the news in a press conference at Detroit’s Fox Theater and said that, though some would doubt the plan, he was intent on serving the city.“As for my being mayor, I’m serious about it. Maybe it won’t be in `93. It might be four years after that. I hope it’s as soon as possible but I’m serious. As mayor of the city I could and only would be completely aware of the conditions, social and economic, of the city.”Wonder, who was born in Saginaw, Michigan and moved to Detroit as a child, added:“If I can bring some of my experience, some of my knowledge, some of the different cultures I’ve been allowed to see, I can bring something positive back to Detroit.”
