1967 - Woodie Guthrie Died
1967 - Woodie Guthrie Died

Folk legend Woody Guthrie died in New York City on October 3, 1967. He had been diagnosed with a degenerative muscle condition called Huntington’s disease as early as the 1940s. Guthrie had been admitted to various hospitals around New York before his death at the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center.

During his finals days, Guthrie was visited often by Bob Dylan, who had traveled to New York from Minnesota specifically to meet Guthrie before he died. Having developed dementia as a result of Huntington’s, Guthrie would welcome Dylan warmly on some days and verbally attack the young songwriter on others.

By the time of his death, Guthrie had become recognized as a godfather of the folk revival and was even officially recognized as a national treasure by Secretary of the Interior Stuart Udall who wrote:

“You have articulated in your songs the sense of identification that each citizen feels towards this land and the wonders which it holds.”
