KC And The Sunshine Band Reach Number One With 'Please Don't Go' 33 Years Ago

Madonna's "Justify My Love," a single that was included on her greatest hits compilation "The Immaculate Collection," reached number one on January 5, 1991.

The song, co-written by Madonna, rocker Lenny Kravitz and singer Ingrid Chavez, was Madonna's ninth chart-topping single. It took over the top spot from Stevie B's "Because I Love You (The Postman Song)" and held on for two weeks. It was eventually replaced by Janet Jackson's "Love Will Never Do (Without You)."

"Justify My Love" is largely remembered for its video, which was so sexually frank that it was banned by MTV. Featuring fetishistic imagery and partial nudity, the clip stirred so much controversy that Madonna appeared on “Nightline” to defend it.
