Kiss made their first appearance without makeup since the 1970s while promoting their album “Lick It Up” on September 18, 1983. The appearance came during a press conference for MTV and came just before they launched a world tour behind the album. Having released 18 albums in the U.S., the band was beginning to see their media coverage wane and decided to expose their faces to the world to generate new interest. Their manager at the time, Danny Goldberg, reportedly had to call in a favor at MTV to even get the band the featured press conference. Their first concert without makeup followed just one month later in Lisbon, Portugal, on October 11, 1983. They kicked off the tour at the city’s Pavilhão Dramático de Cascais. And though the “Lick It Up” tour did not have massive attendance numbers, the album became their first gold record in three years.
