Rage Against the Machine released their covers album “Renegades” on December 5, 2000. The album followed their 1999 effort “The Battle of Los Angeles” and includes covers of songs by Bruce Springsteen, Minor Threat, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. The album broke the top 20 in both the U.S. and Canada, hitting number 14 on the Billboard 200 chart and 13 on the Canadian Albums chart. “Renegades of Funk,” originally by Afrika Bambaataa, hit number nine on the Modern Rock songs chart. Bambaataa And Soulsonic Force penned the track as a tribute to civil rights leaders including Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They initially released the track in 1984. It was the first single from “Renegades” and went to radio on Election Day in 2000.
