Scrushy was the founder and CEO of healthcare company HealthSouth Corp. He was accused of organizing and directing a financial fraud to boost the company’s earnings that embezzled $1.4 billion. He was indicted in 2003, but was later acquitted of all charges in 2005. However, he was again convicted on June 2006 of bribery charges made on Alabama’s governor to receive a seat on the medical regulatory board.
