Heiresses Galore: The 10 Richest Women On Earth

Liliane Bettencourt
Liliane Bettencourt

For the second year running, France's Liliane Bettencourt is the world’s wealthiest woman with a $39.5-billion net worth.

Bettencourt’s fortune increased $3.4 billion from that a year ago, but that was only good enough for her to rank 14 on the list on the Forbes’ list of the wealthiest people, down from number 11 last year.

Bettencourt owns a third of the cosmetics giant L’Oreal which her father, Eugene Schueller, had founded 1907. In 1950 she married French politician André Bettencourt, who subsequently became the deputy chairman of L'Oréal. They had one daughter.

She's also the oldest among women billionaires: she is 94 years old. She is not involved in running the company from the past few years as she is suffering from dementia.

From the past few years, she has been mired in a legal battle against former confidante and photographer Francois-Marie Banier, who was found guilty of swindling Bettencourt.
