Deep rooted problems in its health care system have for long stunted development in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Its score of 0.171/1 makes it the fourth worst on the WHO ranking of countries’ health system performance. The country has been in almost perpetual conflict. As per the International Monetary Fund (IMF), DRC’s GDP for the year 2015 stood at USD 38.5 billion, and was estimated at USD 41.6 billion during 2016. These figures are low, even among African countries. Most health centers across DRC are poorly staffed and equipped, and medical materials are in short supply. There is only one doctor for every 10,000 people in DRC, according to WHO. Average life expectancy is a shockingly low 48.7 years for the population of over 75 million. 43% of these are under 15 years old, making the median age of the country 17. Malnutrition is widespread. Less than 25% of the population has access to proper sanitation facilities and clean water, so water-borne diseases such as diarrhea and cholera are common.
