Eagles Reached #1 With 'One Of These Nights' 36 Years Ago

1957 - Butch Vig Born
1957 - Butch Vig Born

Butch Vig, the legendary producer behind albums like Nirvana’s 1991 classic “Nevermind” and the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Siamese Dream,” was born Bryan David Vig in Viroqua, Wisconsin, on August 2, 1955. His father was a doctor and his mother was a school music teacher.

Vig started playing music at a young age, first taking piano lessons and then switching to drums. After playing with a handful of bands during and after college, Vig signed his first record deal with a group called Fire Town in the late 1980s.

Though the band’s debut with Atlantic Records sold poorly and they eventually disbanded, Vig accrued significant studio experience during this time and soon began producing music full time. After recording a collection of eight demos featuring original drummer Chad Channing with Vig in 1990, Nirvana reconnected with him to record all of “Nevermind.”
Just before the sessions started, Kurt Cobain mailed Vig a cassette tape with the original demos of their brand new songs “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Come As You Are.”

Vig would also go on to be one of the founders of the band Garbage, which would become a staple of the late 1990s alternative scene.
