1962 - Robert Zimmerman Legally Changes Name To Robert Dylan
1962 - Robert Zimmerman Legally Changes Name To Robert Dylan

Bob Dylan legally adopted his stage name on August 2, 1962. The rising folk singer had been born Robert Zimmerman and, after signing his first record deal with Columbia Records, formally changed his name to simplify legal documents.

In Larry Sloman’s book “On the Road with Bob Dylan,” the folk legend’s mother Beatty Stone says that the name change was no surprise to the family and they welcomed the change. When asked if she was hurt by the change Beatty replied:

“No, he just said he couldn’t show two cards and that he wanted to have one legal name and that was it. I wasn’t hurt, we were never hurt because Bob Dylan never hurt us in anyway, there was no way he could ever hurt us. He protected us.”

It was around the same time that Dylan signed on with his famed manager Albert Grossman.
