Bruce Springsteen Reaches Number One With 'The Rising' Nine Years Ago

1952 – Devo's Bob Mothersbaugh Born

Bob Mothersbaugh, guitarist for the post-punk group Devo, was born on August 11, 1952.
The band was formed in the early 1970s, inspired in part by the 1970 shootings at Kent State, where band members Gerald Casale and Bob Lewis went to school. The killings played into their theory of "de-evolution" of human society - a term that gave the band its name.

Mothersbaugh eventually brought his brothers Mark and Jim into the band, which hit it big in 1980 with the single "Whip It." The song got significant MTV airplay for its kitschy video featuring the band in red pyramid hats. Besides his work in Devo, Mothersbaugh has made a name for himself as a movie and TV composer, including credits on the animated TV show "Rugrats."
