Diana Ross hosted a coming out party for the Jackson Five at a club called Daisy’s Disco in Beverly Hills, California on August 11, 1969. Though the group had earned a contract with Motown after auditioning for label chief Barry Gordy, the label’s marketing team altered their back-story, claiming Ross had discovered the youngsters. Ross and the Motown publicity team invited influential members of the music media to the event, which took place between 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. at the club, which formerly stood at 326 Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. The Jackson brothers were coached on their media interactions by a young Motown exec named Suzannae de Passe before the party.Gordy took to the mic at the event predicting that the Jackson’s first three singles would hit the top of the charts and that they would be one of the biggest acts of the decade. Later that summer they made their television debut, playing a cover of “It’s Your Thing” at the Miss Black American pageant at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
