Bruce Springsteen Reaches Number One With 'The Rising' Nine Years Ago

1965 - Watts Riots
1965 - Watts Riots

A routine traffic stop on August 11, 1965, escalated into six days of rioting in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. By the end, nearly three dozen people were dead and more than 2,000 were injured.

Folk singer Phil Ochs was inspired by the riots to write "In the Heat of the Summer," a song that would become best known in a cover version done by Judy Collins. "In the Heat of the Summer" would be included on Collins' 1965 LP "Fifth Album," where it appeared with several Dylan songs as well as with tunes written by Pete Seeger and Gordon Lightfoot.

It was also eventually included on her 1997 compilation "Forever - The Judy Collins Anthology."
