1964 - Supremes' 'Baby Love' Recorded

The Supremes recorded their smash hit single “Baby Love” in studio A at Motown’s Hitsville Recording studio in Detroit on August 13, 1964. The track was penned by the legendary songwriting trio of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Edward Holland Jr. and followed the number one single “Where Did Our Love Go?”

With radio listeners across the country still buzzing to “Where Did Our Love Go,” Motown chief Barry Gordy was quick to release “Baby Love” and had it out to radio by September 17. By Halloween of 1964, the song had hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and landed the trio on the magazine’s cover.

When “Baby Love” grabbed the top spot, the Supremes unseated "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" by Manfred Mann. They held on at number one for four weeks before eventually handing over the top spot to the Shangri-Las with “Leader of the Pack.”
