Jefferson Airplane - then made up of Marty Balin, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen, Skip Spence, Signe Anderson and Bob Harvey - gave their first major performance on August 13, 1965. The gig marked the opening night for the San Francisco folk night spot, The Matrix. By the end of the year, the band would have a record deal. The following year, Signe Anderson would leave the group to be replaced by a 25-year-old descendant of Mayflower passengers: Grace Slick (born Grace Barnett Wing). The band would go through several incarnations over the following decades from Jefferson Airplane to Jefferson Starship to Starship, with hits spanning from 1967's "Somebody To Love" to 1987's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," from the movie "Mannequin."
