Rihanna Reaches Number One With 'Disturbia' Three Years Ago

Rihanna scored the number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with her track “Disturbia” on August 23, 2008. The track was released as part of the singer’s 2007 release “Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded,” and initially hit radio on July 22, 2008.

When “Disturbia” grabbed the top spot, it bumped Katy Perry’s breakout single “I Kissed A Girl” out of the number one position. She held on at number one for one week before she was succeeded by "Whatever You Like" by T.I. She also topped the Dance Club and Pop Songs charts in the U.S. and hit number one in New Zealand and Belgium with “Disturbia.”

The track was penned by Chris Brown and his songwriting team and was originally conceived as a bonus track for the re-release of his 2007 album “Exclusive.” In 2008 he spoke with USA Today about giving the track to Rihanna:

"It's fun being creative and even if you have a concept in your head to write about, you can write it and give it and give it to someone else because it might not personally fit you, but it might be an idea you have."
