Former Fugees singer Lauryn Hill released her debut solo album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” on August 25, 1998. The album, which featured the hit “Doo Wop (That Thing),” reached number one on the Billboard 200 in its debut week. The album also took home five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. However, the fame and success wouldn’t sit well with Hill, and she dropped out of the public eye in 2000, dissatisfied and disillusioned with the music industry. She released a live album, “MTV Unplugged 2.0,” to mixed reviews in 2001 and in 2003 came under fire for remarks about "corruption, exploitation, and abuses" she made at a benefit concert at the Vatican. She also participated in a short-lived reunion with the Fugees from 2004-2006 that unraveled when tensions within the group resurfaced.
