Kings Of Leon Released 'Only By The Night' Three Years Ago

1960 – ‘Twist’ Hits #1

Chubby Checker hit the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his early rock classic “The Twist” on September 19, 1960. The track was released as part of the album “Twist With Chubby Checker” that year and also spawned a dance craze of the same name.

When “The Twist” grabbed the top spot, Checker bumped Elvis Presley’s track "It's Now or Never" from number one. He held on for week before Connie Francis took over with "My Heart Has a Mind of Its Own.”

The track was originally penned by songwriter Hank Ballard for his R&B group the Midnighters and exploded after the dance became a favorite on Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand.” “The Twist” later returned to the top spot in January of 1962, making it the only track in Hot 100 history to hit number one in two separate chart runs.
