Meco’s disco version of the “Star Wars” theme topped the Billboard pop charts on October 1, 1977. The song, which appeared on the album “Star Wars And Other Galactic Funk,” was conceived by Meco after he saw “Star Wars” on its opening day in theaters. Meco reportedly watched the film several times over its opening weekend, and he later contacted an executive at Casablanca records to secure a contract and record his version of the tune. The album was recorded in just three weeks, and the single “Star Wars – Cantina band” became a massive hit. The album itself reached number 13 on the charts.
