Fantasy Records announced the official breakup of Creedence Clearwater Revival on October 16, 1972. Guitarist Tom Fogerty had quit the band more than a year earlier, unhappy by the domineering leadership of his brother John Fogerty, CCR's frontman and principle songwriter. The remaining trio - John, bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug Clifford - put out the band's final album, "Mardi Gras," that April. John, who had written almost all the band's material up until that point, insisted that the "Mardi Gras" album be a more democratic affair, dictating that Cook and Clifford contribute songs and share vocal duties. The result turned out to be a commercial success, but has since been deemed an artistic nadir for the band, though it did contain the Fogerty-penned "Sweet Hitch-Hiker."
