Bob Dylan began recording his now-classic protest track "The Times They Are A-Changing" on October 23, 1963.

The song had been written only a few weeks earlier. Dylan would later say the tune was inspired by a walk he had taken on New York's 42nd Street, during which he was struck by the bitterness and combativeness that marked the communication between protesters and people in authority.

But, as reported in Clinton Heylin's book "Revolution In The Air: The Songs of Bob Dylan 1957-1973," a friend would later claim that when he came across an early typed copy of the lyrics and asked Dylan about the song, the songwriter had a simpler explanation: "it seems to be what people like to hear."

The song would appear on Dylan's third studio album, also called "The Times They Are A-Changin'." The LP was released in January 1964.
