Chicago Reach Number One With 'If You Leave Me Now' 35 Years Ago

1962 - Stevie Wonder Records First Single For Motown: 'Thank You For Loving Me All The Way'
1962 - Stevie Wonder Records First Single For Motown: 'Thank You For Loving Me All The Way'

Stevie Wonder cut his first ever track for Motown, a single called “Thank You For Loving Me All The Way” at the label’s Hitsville Studio on October 23, 1962. The young singer, then billed as Little Stevie Wonder, sang over a backing track that had been recorded by songwriter Andre Williams in late 1961.

Williams penned the track with Clarence Paul and Mickey Stevens and the love lyrics were altered to make it more appropriate for the young talent. Throughout the track, Stevie professes his undying love for an unnamed woman, which may seem strange for a boy until it is revealed he is singing about his mother:

“I’m so glad I have a mother like you, to love me all the way through / Thank you, thank you,” he sings in the track.

The track was released by Motown’s Tamla imprint with the B-side “Castles in the Sand.”
