The streets of Athens turned into a virtual battlefield, as thousands of militant youth went on a destruction spree Sunday to protest the fatal shooting of a 16-year old boy by Greek policemen. As the mob fought with the police and destroyed shops, cars, and business establishments across the country, in what is being called as the country's worst riots in years, the Greek government has made an appeal for calm.
Although the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting remains unclear, the riots were apparently triggered late Saturday when a small group of teenaged boys attacked a police car in central Athens. The policemen reportedly in defense opened fire shooting the victim in the chest, who died enroute to a local hospital.
According to media reports, the two police officers have been suspended; there were no casualties reported; and at least six people have been arrested for looting from the debris.
