Eleanor Roosevelt, the former First Lady of the United States and diplomat, once observed, "You wouldn't worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do." Yet for some individuals, the fear of being judged or negatively evaluated by others is overwhelming - a condition known as social anxiety disorder (SAD). In the United States alone, an estimated 18 million people are currently affected.
While several treatments are approved for SAD, no novel therapies have been introduced in more than two decades. The most recent FDA approvals date back to Effexor in 2003, Zoloft in 2002, and Paxil in 1999.
