Longtime Motorhead guitarist Phil Campbell has died. He was 64.
Campbell died "following a long and courageous battle in intensive care after a complex, major operation," his family said in a statement posted on social media.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Philip Anthony Campbell, who passed away peacefully last night following a long and courageous battle in intensive care after a complex, major operation," says the statement, accompanied by a black and white photo of the rock star.
It added, "Phil was a devoted husband, a wonderful father, and a proud and loving grandfather, known affectionately as 'Bampi'. He was deeply loved by all who knew him and will be missed immensely. His legacy, music and the memories he created with so many will live on forever."
Motorhead paid tribute to its former guitarist in a statement on Facebook, saying, "Phil was a wonderful guitarist, writer, performer, and musician who had Motörhead in his veins."
The band added, "He always led with his gift of guitar, and carried a great sense of humor, but most of all, Phil led with his heart. You could not be around him without a chuckle or twenty, because quite simply, Phil loved life and lived it with great joy."
Philip Anthony Campbell was a Welsh rock musician, best known as the guitarist in Motorhead from 1984 until its disbandment in 2015 upon the death of founder and frontman Lemmy.
He also toured with his own band Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons, featuring his three sons - Todd, Dane and Tyla Campbell.
The quartet released their debut album, The Age of Absurdity, on 2018 January 26. It was followed by We're the Bastards in 2020 and Kings of the Asylum in 2023.
Campbell released his debut solo studio album, Old Lions Still Roar, on October 25, 2918.
Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons had scheduled a European and Australian tour during March-May this year but canceled it last month "due to medical advice" from a doctor.
