Darby Crash, founding vocalist of the Germs, died of an intentional heroin overdose on December 7, 1980. The Germs had played their final show at the Starwood Club in Hollywood just days before.Crash had, like his idol Sid Vicious, long suffered from a severe heroin addiction and depression. According to George Gimarc’s “Post-Punk Diary,” he had frequently talked about killing himself on stage. Police found him sitting below a suicide note taped to the wall that read “here lies Darby Crash.”Though Crash had been an innovator and was greatly mourned in the punk world, his death went largely unnoticed by the general public. Beatles legend John Lennon was murdered in New York City the following day.
