Otis Redding recorded his biggest hit, "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay," on December 7, 1967.

The session took place at the Memphis studios of Stax/Volt Records. The song was co-written by Redding and producer Steve Cropper. Redding formulated the idea of the song following his highly successful appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival that summer.

The song would go on to top the Billboard Hot 100 the following year. Three days after the recording, Redding and four members of his band would be killed in a plane crash near Madison, Wisconsin.
