Carl Douglas hit number one with his disco classic “Kung Fu Fighting” on December 7, 1974. The track was released form Douglas’ album “Kung Fu Fighting and Other Great Love Songs” and helped popularize the growing disco craze in that era. When “Kung Fu Fighting” hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it claimed the top spot from "I Can Help” by Billy Swan. The novelty track held on for two weeks at number one before Harry Chapin grabbed the top spot with "Cat's in the Cradle.” The track was written by the Indian-born producer Biddu, who says it was initially meant to be filler for another single:“Since it was going to be a B-side, I said ‘Fine let’s have a song called ‘Kung Fu Fighting.’’ So I started working out some melody for it. Nothing was taken seriously,” he told Billboard.
