Usher hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chat with his single “U Got It Bad” on December 15, 2001. The track was released as the third single from Usher’s third studio album, “8701,” which peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 chart. When “U Got It Bad” hit number one, it claimed the top spot from "Family Affair" by Mary J. Blige. Usher held on for one week at the top before he was succeeded by "How You Remind Me" by Nickelback. He later claimed the top spot back from Nickelback and held on for five weeks before "Always on Time" by Ja Rule featuring Ashanti hit number one. While speaking with Billboard, producer Jermaine Dupri said he was inspired to write the track after seeing Usher get distracted by a girlfriend:“We were working in the studio and Usher was in the recording booth. He couldn’t get his performance together. It was because he had a girl in the studio,” he recalled.
