Incubus Reach Number One With 'Light Grenades' Five Years Ago

1983 - Who Disband
1983 - Who Disband

The Who officially parted ways on December 16, 1983. The announcement came after a period of personal turmoil for Pete Townshend, who had recently recovered from a heroin addiction.

Following the death of Keith Moon, Townshend fell into a period of heavy drinking and cocaine use that ultimately gave way to a heroin addiction. The band briefly ceased touring while Townshend moved to California to get clean. He did, in fact, return to the group in 1982 and they released “It’s Hard,” which was supported by their final tour.

By late 1983, however, Townshend was struggling to produce material he felt was worthy of a new Who album and ultimately announced his resignation from the band. Though Pete gave the rest of the band his blessing to continue, they all decided to split up as well.
