Nirvana released their influential debut album “Bleach” on June 15, 1989. The album came shortly after Nirvana’s initial single release, “Love Buzz,” which was released through indie label Sub Pop in November of 1988.The album was funded by a peripheral Nirvana member named Jason Everman, who was later cut loose from the band and did a stint with Soundgarden before leaving the music business. Sub Pop put little promotion into “Bleach” but, through increasing buzz on college radio stations, the album went on to hit number 89 on the Billboard 200 chart. The LP included the first studio version of Nirvana’s classic track “About A Girl,” which later became one of their most popular songs when released as part of the band’s “MTV Unplugged in New York.” Producer Jack Endino recalls Kurt Cobain feeling inspired by the track, despite its uncharacteristic sound.“I remember he warned me ‘OK some people aren’t going to like this song but I want to do this anyway. This is a direction I want more songs to sound like,’” Endino says in Gillian Gaar’s “Rough Guide to Nirvana.”Nirvana, of course, would go on to become one of the biggest bands in the world, after their sophomore disc, “Nevermind,” catapulted them to international stardom.
