Madonna’s self-titled debut album hit stores in the U.S. on July 27, 1983. The up-and-coming singer had been discovered by Sire Records chief Seymour Stein while performing in New York City’s downtown club scene and began work on the album soon after.

The album contains several of Madonna’s signature tracks, including “Holiday,” “Borderline” and “Lucky Star.” The latter would become the singer’s first top-five track on the Hot 100 chart, also hitting number one on the dance chart.

To that point, Madonna was still without a manager and she quickly connected with Michael Jackson’s former manager Freddy DeMann.

“She had the most unbelievable physicality I’ve ever seen in any human. She was enrapturing, she was just captivating, she had the same moxie she has today,” DeMann says in Mary Cross’ “Madonna: A Biography.”
