Paul Simon held his famed concert in New York City’s Central Park on August 15, 1991. The show was scheduled in support of Simon’s “Graceland” and “Rhythm of the Saints” albums and initial estimates numbered the crowd at between 600,000 and 750,000 fans. Later estimates, however, suggested the number was closer to 100,000.At the show, Simon performed a mix of songs from those two releases in addition to his earlier solo work and tracks from his days with Art Garfunkel. The concert was released as a live album on November 5, 1991 and includes Simon staples like “You Can Call Me Al,” "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard,” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”And while Simon was showered with praise for the homecoming celebration, his longtime partner and fellow New Yorker Garfunkel did not appear at the gig. When later asked by the New York Times why he had missed the show, Art replied, “I guess I’m not good enough to have been invited.”
