Diana Ross and Lionel Richie scored a number one hit with their collaborative track “Endless Love” on August 15, 1981. The track was written by Lionel as the theme song to the `80s film of the same name starring Brooke Shields. When “Endless Love” hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it bumped Rick Springfield’s single “Jessie’s Girl” out of the top spot. The Motown duo held on at number one for nine weeks before they were succeeded by Christopher Cross with "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do).”While speaking with Ebony magazine in 1981, Ross said the collaboration was an easy choice after the Commodores signed with Motown:“They started getting a lot of hits and we thought that some day we could do something together. I really don’t know who can take credit for the idea of Lionel and I working together, but I was very pleased to be asked. I loved Lionel’s song, it was like a gift to me.”
